Proms on the Farm – a fantastic evening

PromsOnTheFarm_600Silsden’s annual Proms on the Farm have hailed the latest event as the best yet. An estimated 1,000-plus people converged on Sycamore Farm, Brunthwaite, for the charity event. The field was full of decorated gazebos as people revelled in an entertainment-packed evening.

“It was absolutely fantastic and we had more people than ever there,” said Rosalie Holroyd, for the organising team.

“We were helped by the weather. It was a lovely evening and everybody was sat outside their gazebos, which had been beautifully decorated.

“The atmosphere was just wonderful.”

Gazebos were set up and decorated from early afternoon and the event was opened at 7pm by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Joanne Dodds. Judging of the best-dressed gazebo then took place and the accolade went to the Simpson family – as the cartoon Simpsons!

The programme of music featured the Sultans of Swing, the Big Bang and headliner the Skelmanthorpe Band, with soloist Sarah Halstead. All the favourites from the Last Night of the Proms were played. The event also featured an auction and raffle, with an array of donated lots and prizes.

“The support we receive from businesses and the wider community is incredible and we are extremely grateful,” said Mrs Holroyd.

“We sold over £1,000 in raffle tickets alone and had some great prizes.”

_DSC8741The Proms began as a small event 12 years ago raising money for Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands and Silsden Methodist Church, and have grown massively. Over the years it has coined-in more than £100,000. This year’s total is still to be finalised.

“It began with just myself and Jean Newns – who owns the field – but now we have a team of seven,” said Mrs Holroyd.

“We still support the same causes. Initially the Methodist Church funds were for the new building but now they go into community projects based there.

“We try to keep a kitty of about £150 to hold the event and all the rest goes to charity.

“People are already asking when next year’s will be! We’ve started planning!”

Young artists showcase their talents as Silsden continues its Tour de France legacy

SCHOOL artists will join crafters on Saturday as Silsden holds its second event this month in honour of the Tour de France.

The Silsden Showcase will take place on Saturday 11th July. It will stretch across several venues in the town and feature a host of local groups.

Part of the month-long Silsden Grand DeParty, the event begins at 10am and continues into the afternoon.

Hothfield Junior School promises a cornucopia of talents as its former pupils display their artwork at Silsden Town Hall.

Pupils in the oldest class – who are due to move to senior school in September – used paints, brushes and vivid colour to commit their thoughts and memories of Hothfield life to paper.

Working with artist Tony Bullock, the year six children also studied the work of other painters before making a thoughtful and creative approach to their own pictures.

Headteacher, James Proctor, said: “The paintings are the children’s own legacy to the school and to our memories of their time with us.”

A craft fair, open from 10am to 3pm, will display a whole range of creative activities by residents, will run alongside the art exhibition.

Visitors of all ages can try out some of the crafts for themselves or watch demonstrations by more experienced crafters.

The fair is organised by the not-for-profit shop Been Busy and will feature more than 15 stalls.

Hands-on activities will include jewellery making, card craft, gift box making and bird house decoration. Demonstrations range from painting to die cutting and felting.

Angela Malcolm, from Been Busy, said that entry would be free but some activities might involve a charge for materials.

She said: “Refreshments will be provided by the parents from Hothfield School, and proceeds will go towards enhanced learning opportunities in the school.”

The school exhibition is part of the Silsden Grand DeParty Community Craft Trail.

The celebration will continue on Wednesday when Silsden Local History Group will lead a two-hour guided history walk around Silsden, meeting at the bandstand at 7.15pm.

The Proms on the Farm will be held at Sycamore Farm in Brunthwaite later this month, featuring the Skelmanthorpe Band playing favourites from the Last Night at the Proms, along with vocalist Sarah Halstead. Proceeds will be split between Manorlands and Silsden Methodist Church.

A film night on Thursday 23rd July will show ‘LAD’ A Yorkshire Story and winner of 21 International Film Festival Awards.

The Grand DeParty will finish on July 26 with Silsden’s Gala. The parade begins at 1pm and is followed by events in the top field of the park.

A Grand Day Out in the Park – a great success

SILSDEN Park started a series of July events celebrating the first anniversary of the Tour de France coming through the town.

SilsdenPark_4thJuly2015The Grand Day Out In The Park lasted six hours and spread across a large area of the park.

Silsden Bowls Club had an open day where people could try crown green bowling, using special targets on the green.

Silsden Storm, the town’s new under-10s rugby league team, played against Swillington early in the day, then in the afternoon Silsden AFC juniors played exhibition matches and hosted a penalty shoot-out competition.

There was also tennis coaching on the tennis courts, relay races, a demonstration by scooter experts on the ‘rocks and ramps’, and a children’s obstacle course, run by cycle training organisation Becycling of Bingley.

Silsden Town Band performed music, dogs showed off their ability on a special course, and West Yorkshire Police officers chatted with visitors.

The organisers of the event, Silsden’s Grand deParty Group, said they were grateful to everyone who was involved with the event.
